As a STEM advocate, electrical engineer, and former charter school founder, my passion lies in unlocking STEM opportunities for underserved youth, particularly those from ethnic minority backgrounds. Recently, Baton Rouge STEM partnered with Claiborne Elementary, a school with over 400 students in grades K-5, to host a vibrant STEM Festival.

Claiborne’s demographics – 91% African-American, 7% Hispanic, and 98% economically disadvantaged, coupled with an “F” rating in the state accountability system – aren’t excuses. They represent a stark reality and a powerful call to action. The current landscape of STEM professionals in Louisiana and the nation does not reflect the vibrant diversity of Claiborne’s student body. This disparity isn’t a dead end, it’s a massive opportunity.
During the STEM Festival, designed to make state test preparation engaging, we witnessed something remarkable. Over 25 STEM stations buzzed with activity. Students dove into hands-on science experiments exploring force and motion, chemical reactions, and the wonders of life science. Technology stations ignited their curiosity with coding, gaming, and robotics. Engineering challenges had them designing bridges and exploring aerospace, while math stations made numbers and measurements come alive.

Why is this important? By exposing these young minds to the practical application of their learning, we’re planting seeds of passion. We’re showing them that science isn’t just a textbook, but a world of possibilities. We’re creating pathways to future success.
Imagine a Claiborne student, once labeled “at-risk,” now building a bridge, coding a robot, or launching a rocket. This isn’t just a dream. It’s the reality we witnessed at the STEM Festival. These students have the potential to redefine the demographics of STEM, but they need access, opportunity, and a community that believes in them.
This isn’t just about a one-day festival. It’s about a collective effort. It’s about partnering with educators and schools to foster a community that nurtures these students’ potential. It’s about changing the trajectory of their lives, one hands-on STEM experience at a time.
Claiborne Elementary isn’t a challenge; it’s a canvas. It’s a place where we can paint a new picture of STEM, one where every student has the chance to shine. Let’s work together to make that picture a reality.
